Ethical Dilemma and Adult Education

In recent time, ethical dilemma has become one of the most important policy issues and concerns in the fields of studies such as medicine, finance, business management, and law. Ethical issues have significant impacts on the daily lives of professionals who engage in medicine, low, and finance compared to instructors engaged in adult education. In some instances, ethical dilemma has become an issue of life and death of the above professions. However, in the context of globalization and expansion of communication technology, ethical issues have significant impacts on the professional development of adult educators. In this posting, I discuss about the ethical decision making in the field of adult education. There are strategies that lead to promote environment for ethical practice in adult education. Ethical decision making model identifies three factors such as values, obligations, and consequences which are included in ethical dilemma.
Values are related with our personal beliefs and how these beliefs lead to implement our actions. When consider the personal beliefs, adult educators should understand how adult education promote personal growth, social change, and worker productivity. Similarly, commitment associated with the set of personal beliefs are important to determine the degree of emphasize on certain tasks. For example, an instructor may not be happy with some policies of the institute and he/she may negatively response on such policies. This is completely based on the values he/she believes. Generally, educators make high emphasize on the values that they have high commitment.
Obligations are also very important aspect of ethical dilemma. Instructors have obligations for students, employers, and professional associations. As long as obligations are not a problem, ethical dilemma is not become an important issue in adult learning. In some instances, fulfilling one ethical obligation may lead to create an ethical dilemma. For example, an instructor has an ethical obligation to prepare students for getting an entry level. However, his/her teaching may lead to create necessary skills among students to enroll in higher education. This scenario may create an issue of ethical dilemma related to primary obligation of the instructor and how he/she serves his/her students. When somebody faces dilemma, there may be alternatives for selecting as a solution for a given problem. These solutions may have short-term or long-term implications for adult learning.
Ethical dilemma may arise in adult education and training programs. This ethical dilemma is related with self-directed learning, technology censorship, social change, and marketing. In general, there are three strategies that can help to resolve ethical dilemma in the field of adult education. First, it is necessary to understand many ethical dilemma questions “right” vs “right”. Second, analyze the importance of critical reflection on practice in the context of critical dilemma. Third, an instructor should create an environment that encourage ethical practice
